Resident Evil 9 hits 6 million in two weeks as Capcom extends nine-year growth streak
Capcom raised its fiscal 2026 forecast again. Sales revenue jumped from 190 billion yen to 195.3 billion yen, with operating profit up 2.2 billion yen from the previous 73 billion to 75.2 billion yen. Net profit climbed from 51 billion to 54.5 billion yen. Compare that to Square Enix or Bandai Namco—fellow legacy Japanese publishers still posting erratic earnings—while Capcom locks in nine consecutive fiscal years of record profits across every metric.

The driver is singular: Resident Evil 9: Requiem sold like wildfire. Launched February 27, it crossed 6 million units in roughly two weeks. For context, RE8 hit 4.7 million in its first week, RE7 reached 3 million in its first month—RE9 just raised the ceiling again. Digital sales likely account for a significant chunk, given Capcom's explicit emphasis on "strong digital content performance."

Shareholders benefit directly. Year-end dividend per share rose from 20 yen to 25 yen, bringing the full-year forecast to 45 yen per share. Contrast that with Ubisoft, another AAA-driven publisher that saw its stock halve last year while canceling dividends entirely. Capcom's approach trades on predictable output for long-term trust—the RE Engine matured, development cycles stabilized, and at least one AAA title ships annually.
From another angle, Capcom's playbook resembles Nintendo's: skip the hardware arms race, focus on IP cultivation and cross-platform reach. RE9 launched simultaneously across PC, PS5, and Xbox Series, with Steam concurrent players hitting a series high. This strategy pays off especially well in the current late-console-generation window, where the install base is massive and multi-platform releases function as risk mitigation.

A new title announcement is slated for June. Given Capcom's cadence, expect Monster Hunter or Street Fighter news. RE9's momentum has runway left—DLC and crossover content are likely already in production. For players, now's the optimal entry point: major bugs patched, prices haven't dropped yet, and multiplayer population remains strong.
