Sony quietly discontinues PS5 HD Camera, ending its least essential accessory ever

Sony has quietly pulled the PS5 HD Camera from PlayStation Direct, with European German-speaking regions following suit. No official discontinuation statement has been issued, but the accessory's fate is effectively sealed.

The device was doomed from launch. Its functionality is absurdly limited—streaming only, with zero PS5 game support, no PS VR2 compatibility, and it can't even run PS4 camera-dependent titles. Paying for a streaming-only device when smartphone cameras outperform it makes little sense.

Sony's neglect made things worse. Post-launch support was nonexistent—no firmware updates, no feature expansions, just abandonment. The player community has long labeled it one of gaming's most pointless accessories, and dismal sales reflect that. Microsoft's Kinect at least had a motion gaming ecosystem; Sony didn't even bother with token effort here.

If you own one, keep it as a cautionary tale in hardware design. For streaming purposes, the market offers dozens of superior webcams at similar prices—no reason to cling to an orphaned product. This discontinuation might be the best outcome for everyone involved.
