Is *Star Fox* Really Coming Back? Switch 2 May Welcome the Return of a Classic Ace
When it comes to Star Fox, what comes to mind for me isn’t some dazzling tech demo, but the romantic spirit of aerial shooters from Nintendo’s golden age. That feeling of piloting a fighter into the crossfire of space, hearing your teammates call for backup over the radio, has the same youthful chivalry as young heroes fighting side by side in old wuxia tales—straightforward, direct, yet full of spirit. For many longtime players, this IP may not be the hottest, but it has always carried the sentiment that “it deserves a place of its own.”

Now a new rumor has arrived. According to industry insider NateTheHate2, Nintendo may announce a new Star Fox title this month, in April, through its official social media channels and the mobile app “Nintendo Today!” rather than saving it for a Nintendo Direct. More importantly, the game is rumored to be coming to Switch 2, with a possible summer release. It must be emphasized that all of this is still just rumor at the moment, and Nintendo has not officially confirmed anything—that needs to be made clear upfront.

Judging from the leaked details, the new game will most likely avoid any radical change in direction, instead continuing the series’ classic gameplay while trying to add online multiplayer. It’s actually a rather delicate choice. Preserving the old flavor is what many longtime fans value most, because what has always made Star Fox truly captivating was never an overload of systems or a map stuffed with open-world checklists, but rather its brisk, sharp, arcade-like stage design. Yet beyond nostalgia, if it simply ports the old framework over to a new console unchanged, it could easily come across as too conservative—like repeating the same inherited sword technique over and over until it loses its edge.

There’s another detail worth pondering. The article mentions that Fox McCloud recently appeared in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and this kind of cross-media appearance is rarely just a casual touch—it feels more like a warm-up before the character’s popularity starts to rise again. In recent years, Nintendo has become increasingly precise in how it deploys its legacy IPs, linking films, social media, apps, and games together with a strong sense of timing. If this rumor is true, then Star Fox’s return is most likely not a sudden whim, but part of Switch 2’s content pipeline.
Speaking of the game itself, what I care about most is not whether it gets announced, but whether it dares to create something genuinely new on top of its classic foundation. If the online multiplayer is just simple versus battles, its meaning will be limited; but if it’s built around squad coordination, route assignments, or even rescuing teammates, then there’s a real chance to bring back the series’ signature “ace pilot squadron” identity. Compared with today’s action and shooting games, Star Fox’s biggest advantage is not its scale, but its distinctiveness—and as long as it holds onto that, it still has a chance.

But looking at it calmly, the most suitable attitude for players at this stage is still to wait and see. Rumors are rumors, after all, not official announcements, and the release timing, gameplay details, and even whether multiplayer exists are all far from set in stone. As a longtime player, I of course hope it’s true, and I also hope this isn’t just another case of bringing out an old IP for a quick round of nostalgia. If a name that has been silent for so long can take flight again on Switch 2, it would be deeply moving; but if in the end it only makes a fleeting appearance, that really would be disheartening.
