After the *Khazan* team was reassigned, is there still hope for a sequel?
When a game has only been updated for a few days and its core team is suddenly reassigned, that kind of decision, to me, is like suddenly removing your key pieces in an endgame: every move that follows becomes more passive. What The First Berserker: Khazan has recently run into is exactly this kind of chilling situation for players. According to Nexon’s official statement cited by Yonhap News Agency, the Neople development team responsible for the game has already been reassigned to other Nexon project groups.

From a systems design perspective, what is most unsettling about this adjustment is not just the personnel shift itself, but the fact that the timing is so sensitive. Only a few days have passed since The First Berserker: Khazan released its update on March 31, and the team was then pulled away, so players will naturally interpret this as a sign that the project has entered a contraction phase. Some outsiders have even regarded this change as the effective disbandment of the development team, while the official side, up to now, has still not clearly stated whether the game’s future support will be completely terminated.
Neople’s explanation is that it wants to “let the team’s experience benefit other projects.” That certainly makes sense at the level of corporate resource allocation, but from the player’s perspective, the issue is that Khazan was still in a stage that needed continued polishing. Especially for this kind of hardcore action RPG, combat feel, balance pacing, endgame content, and optimization support all rely heavily on ongoing post-launch iteration to be fully realized. Once the core members are scattered, further improvements often end up being wasted.

In terms of strategic depth, what concerns me more is the business signal behind this. The First Berserker: Khazan was positioned as a core title in the global strategy for the Dungeon & Fighter IP, and Nexon had previously described it as the first strategic step in DNF’s globalization. But the reality is that after the game launched in 2025, media and player reviews were only passable—not disastrous, but its sales clearly fell short of expectations. Yonhap News Agency also mentioned that the delayed release of the Chinese version was likely one of the key reasons for its weak commercial performance.
This creates a very typical game-theory problem: the company says the strategic objective has already been achieved, but the market has not delivered enough return, so resources begin to shift elsewhere. In other words, Khazan may have completed its mission of “testing the global market,” but it failed to secure a sufficiently impressive result, and therefore lost its eligibility for continued heavy investment. For players who enjoy this kind of game, this is not merely disappointing—it is watching a combat system with real potential get paused before it ever had the chance to fully mature.
If you are still on the fence about this game, my advice is straightforward: treat it as a largely complete single-player action title whose future updates carry a high degree of uncertainty, rather than expecting major optimization or content expansion in the near term. If you are considering buying it, decide based on the current version’s reputation; if you are waiting for an “ultimate definitive edition,” you probably need to lower your expectations first. After all, with the core team reassigned, the sequel-level improvements and combat system enhancements players are hoping for will be difficult to realize in the short term.
For the DNF IP, a truly sophisticated globalization strategy should turn a single test into a long-term series, rather than rushing to switch tables before the next move has even been properly set up. Right now, Khazan’s future has not been officially sentenced to death, but the problem is that once the commander leaves the board, endgames are often the hardest to close out.
