“Indie action that pairs isometric combat with watercolor stained-glass visuals and a continuous narrator, delivering a tightly paced six-hour story you finish in one sitting.”
Nuestro veredicto
Pull all the scores together and the conclusion is steady: Bastion sits firmly in the high-quality tier. IGN handed it a 9, PC Gamer an 8, and on Steam it holds a 95 percent positive rating across tens of thousands of reviews. Every signal points the same direction. This is a work of unusually high finish at a deliberately moderate size, and the years since release have only confirmed how well it has held up.
A tight loop that never leaves a gap
Looked at as an experience, Bastion is a compact closed circuit. The isometric action RPG provides solid, readable tactile feedback. The weapon, skill, and idol systems supply real depth without bloat. The watercolor-and-stained-glass art makes the theme of a world shattered and rebuilt physically visible on screen. And the magnetic narrator both carries the story and fills every emotional gap, so that across six hours there is almost no dead air. Each element props up the others, which is why the whole feels larger than the sum of a short campaign and a small studio's first outing.
As Supergiant Games' debut, it also earned awards and nominations that, in hindsight, signposted everything the studio would go on to do. The narration-driven identity born here is the same DNA that runs through their later catalog, which is part of why Bastion still reads as a foundational indie rather than a dated curiosity. It is one of those rare debuts where you can hear the whole studio's future being announced in the very first work, fully formed in voice and intent even if later games would refine the execution further.
The clear-eyed caveats
The drawbacks are just as easy to name. For players raised on sprawling open-world projects, the content is a touch short, and the story is scaled like a tidy short story rather than an epic. Some players may also tire of a storytelling approach that leans so heavily on narration. None of that, though, is enough to shake its standing as an exceptionally polished small-scale work. These are matters of fit and taste, not flaws in execution, and that distinction matters when you decide whether it is for you.
Is it worth the six to ten hours? If you are hunting for an action RPG you can experience completely in a week or two, without being dragged down by endless side content, Bastion slots into your schedule perfectly. Even on a single run through the mainline, you feel it: every step lands on a road that was just assembled, every offhand line from the narrator a reminder that this world was once whole, and that you are deciding by hand what it becomes next.
Who it is for, and who it is not
If what you want is a single game to anchor an entire year of play, this may not fill your time budget. But treated as a tightly structured album of musical storytelling, played front to back across six hours with no fast-forward, the density of this journey more than earns your time. There is a real argument that the discipline of its length is a feature rather than a compromise, that knowing exactly how much to say and then stopping is its own kind of craftsmanship, and that the game is better for refusing to pad itself out to meet some expected runtime.
So the verdict comes down to expectations. Come to it wanting a hundred-hour home and you will leave hungry. Come to it wanting a complete, beautifully made, six-hour story with a voice you will not forget, and you will leave having played one of the best small games of its generation. The recommendation writes itself: anyone who loves compact combat and narration-led storytelling should not pass this Bastion by.
