GameSpot's core phrase was "return to the series at the very top of its game," and PC Gamer put it more bluntly: "Team Ninja is giving FromSoftware a run for its money." That kind of industry framing is new for Nioh; the prior two entries scored well but were never treated by mainstream outlets as genuine FromSoftware challengers. Nioh 3 puts Team Ninja back in the "direct competitor" seat, which is the largest event here in an industry sense. That does not mean both studios race on the same track: FromSoftware keeps fine-tuning the soulslike prototype while Team Ninja walks a parallel "hardcore action plus dual styles" path. Nioh 3 is the first time international media seriously discussed that path, the biggest recognition the series has earned in ten years. Chinese outlets echoed it, with 3DM calling the game an "action-RPG milestone" and critics noting the studio has finally stepped out of the soulslike shadow into its own design philosophy. This media consensus is a first in the franchise's history, and it marks a clear rise in Team Ninja's authority within the action-RPG conversation, the kind of standing that took FromSoftware years of consistent output to earn.

Who Should Buy It, and Who Should Not

Four buyer profiles fit. First, hardcore action-RPG players who loved Bloodborne, Elden Ring, Dark Souls, Stellar Blade, or NieR: Automata: this is the decade's most meaningful genre innovation, and the dual styles plus Transcendent Heart are worth experiencing on their own. Second, lapsed Nioh veterans who grew fatigued; Game Informer explicitly frames this as a "fundamental leap forward" after two increasingly static entries. Third, fans of open exploration paired with hardcore combat who want "Elden Ring's openness, Bloodborne's speed, and Devil May Cry's style switching" in one package, currently the only game that holds all three. Fourth, Chinese-speaking newcomers to hardcore Japanese action RPGs, where the deep localisation lowers the language barrier and the PS5 build is visually approachable.

Three reverse profiles should pause. Those who fear suffering: this is a hardcore soulslike with frequent demise, precise boss demands, and enemy-read timing; if the first five hours break you, try Stellar Blade or Bloodstained instead. Narrative-driven players: the writing is not the studio's strength, and while the time-hopping improves on prior entries, it falls well short of The Witcher 3, The Last of Us, or Disco Elysium. And PC-plus-Windows-10 users: launch-week optimisation is imperfect, so pick PS5 or wait two months.

On platforms, PS5 is the best pick: Tempest 3D audio, DualSense adaptive triggers, polished optimisation, and a 4K/60fps performance mode. PC on Windows 11 is the runner-up, with a higher ceiling but demanding Windows 11 and an RTX 30-series card or better; Windows 10 is not recommended, and Steam Deck struggles to hold even 30fps. Nioh 3 is not flawless, with a mid-tier story, a PC optimisation shortfall, and thin score variety, but it nails the one thing that matters: it pushed action-RPG design a real step forward. If you only buy a handful of action RPGs, it deserves one of the slots.
