“The looter-shooter that nailed both random-loot grind and a top-tier villain in Handsome Jack, built for long co-op nights”

Notre verdict

Gather the six dimensions and Borderlands 2 reads as a game with very sharp strengths and very honest flaws. It is no flawless all-rounder. But it pulled off the two things that matter most — the pull of the loot grind and the soul of its villain writing — at a height the genre still struggles to reach. The 8.8 verdict is for that rare double act.

The coordinate it planted, and who it is for

A genre's foundation stone

Rewind to 2012 and the thing it did was foundational. It did not invent the looter-shooter, but it sanded a rough genre smooth and proved, forcefully, that the rush of a loot grind and the work of telling a real story can coexist in one game without elbowing each other out. Later titles — Destiny 2, The Division — all run on the framework it blazed. Calling it the genre's foundation stone is no exaggeration. The tech dates, the visuals get outrun, but a villain you both laugh at and loathe and a loot loop you cannot put down do not depreciate; whenever people argue about how a looter-shooter ought to be built, this game is still the reference pulled off the shelf.

So who is it for? Anyone who wants the satisfaction of gear progression, is glad to grind long co-op nights with friends on comms, and still refuses an empty plot — this is built for you almost to spec. It hands you dozens to hundreds of hours of purpose, plus a villain who makes you laugh out loud and a cast that will not shut up. If you love the "one more drop and then bed" brand of late-night hook, it becomes your comfort food. Few games of its generation reward that particular appetite as completely, and fewer still do it while keeping you genuinely invested in why you are out there grinding in the first place.

Who should skip it, the edition to grab, and its place in the family

Long co-op grinding

Who should walk away? If the "go here, clear the foes, fetch the thing" errand structure grates on you, or if what you crave is a lean, tight, no-wasted-line linear single-player story, the padded campaign pacing and sprawling side quests will wear you down. Its joy is built on finding variety inside repetition, not on a single uninterrupted arc — that is its character and its filter. The same goes if you are the kind of player who uninstalls the instant the credits roll: most of its content design simply is not aimed at you, and the calculus turns sour. Decide first whether you want a story or a system to live in, then book your trip to Pandora.

On editions, grab the one with all the DLC — a Game of the Year or Handsome Collection build. The series-best pack praised above, Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep, and most of the endgame kit live inside that DLC; buying the base game alone is buying half a game and missing the best of it. Within the family tree this is the load-bearing sequel: it caught the world the first game left behind, used a prequel to chart Jack's rise, and used the third entry to extend the looter-shooter framework it defined — Jack's full arc spanning several games, with this one its boldest brushstroke. In the end its hardest-to-replace quality is the weld: bottomless randomized gear progression fused to an ever-present villain. Rivals like Destiny 2 can run a grind more industrial and more polished, yet none has written a villain you remember for life. A play system with a soul is harder to copy than a perfect, cold one — and that, more than anything, is why people still bring it up after all these years.
