“If you crave pure combo-driven action and can stomach loud anime theatrics, Scarlet Nexus turns a neon city into your toy box across two complementary campaigns.”

Notre verdict

So is Scarlet Nexus worth sinking sixty hours into? Yes, with one firm condition attached: you have to like action games. If fast, demanding combat is not your idea of fun, this experience will feel like an ordeal, because the fighting is the load-bearing pillar of everything else. But if your idea of unwinding is gripping a controller and venting the day's tension through it, this is close to paradise. It is the rare game that turns pure mechanical pleasure into its entire reason for existing, and it is unembarrassed about that focus.

The story, for all its theatrical excess, lands the one thing that matters most: it is complete. In an era flooded with half-finished releases, that completeness is itself a virtue. The art style is so distinct that you will recognize it on sight years from now, and the music, never showy, knows precisely when to lean in and shove you forward.

Who this is for, and who should walk away

The audience is clear-cut. Action devotees who like to channel stress through their hands will find a genuine haven here, and the dual-protagonist setup hands them not just more hours but more perspective, fending off the repetition that such length usually invites. The combat alone, with its environment-as-arsenal psychokinesis, justifies the price of admission for anyone hungry for that specific flavor of kinetic catharsis. These are players who measure a game by how it feels in the hands rather than how it reads on the page, and for them the loop of grab, throw, and chain is its own complete reward. They will happily look past the menu friction and the texture wobble because the thing that matters most to them is firing on every cylinder, hour after hour, without ever growing stale.

Story-first players, by contrast, should approach with caution. The narrative is sincere and complete, but it is also loud, and unless you can roll with the exaggerated, name-shouting theatrics of high-energy anime drama, the presentation will wear on you long before the plot wins you over. This is not a game that hides what it is, so the mismatch is easy to avoid if you are honest with yourself about your tolerance for melodrama going in.

Where it sits against the field

Measured against its peers, Scarlet Nexus stakes out a confident position. Set it beside something like the melancholic, multi-route NieR machine-war ruins and the contrast is instructive: that rival wins on narrative ambition and the gut-punch of its repeated playthroughs, but it simply cannot match the moment-to-moment tactile thrill of hurling a city block at a foe. Where the competition leans on story and reflection, this game leans on feel, and for a certain player that trade is no contest at all.

The critical consensus parking around eight out of ten is, in the end, exactly right. It neither overrates nor undersells what is on offer. This is a game that knows precisely what it can deliver and delivers it without apology: pure, uncomplicated joy. In a complicated world, that kind of purity is harder to find than it should be. Switch off your phone for a weekend, let it pull you under, and it will make you forget reality for two solid days. Sometimes that is the whole point of picking up a controller, and Scarlet Nexus understands that better than most.
