Our Verdict
The most useful question to ask of Minecraft Dungeons is not whether it can stand in for Diablo 3 and its acclaimed expansion. It is whether it earns a relaxed stretch of your time spent farming through it. The answer is yes, provided you do not load the expectations too heavily before you start.
The Ledger, Both Sides
Its strengths are easy to list. The art gives the cube world a real sense of adventure, the gameplay presses the farming barrier to the floor, and co-op turns a simple clear-the-room loop into something noisy and warm. You do not need to study elaborate builds or memorize system rules. You step in, you swing, you grab loot, you rotate playstyles. It is fast and it is smooth, and that frictionlessness is the whole appeal.
Its weaknesses are just as easy to list. There is no building or crafting, which will leave a slice of Minecraft players grasping at air. The system depth trails behind mature looters, so the long grind loses steam. The story is a passable backdrop and rarely the reason you keep going. More than five years on from release, those gaps look sharper, because peers in the genre have pushed the standard for content depth and seasonal drive well past where this game sits. Looters that arrived later treat live, rotating content as a baseline, and against that backdrop a one-time campaign with a handful of expansions can feel modest, however well-made it is. The fundamentals here are solid, but the genre kept moving, and the comparison is no longer as flattering as it once was.
Who It Is Actually For
A bit of outside context helps frame it. The Steam audience sits near ninety percent positive, which signals a stable, well-liked title rather than a divisive one, and that reception matches the experience. This is not a misfire, and it is not a triumph. It is a focused, lightweight action looter that knows precisely what it wants to be.
That focus is also the recommendation. It shines brightest with friends, with family gathered around a single screen, or whenever you want an undemanding dungeon game to open without ceremony. Grind it hard and alone for too long and the flavor thins out. Play it with people, trading revives and shoving back a wave together, and it abruptly tastes far better than its modest depth would suggest. Score it on those terms, against its own ambitions rather than a heavyweight rival's, and it lands as a comfortable, generous, genuinely fun way to spend an evening.
Set expectations correctly and the math works out in its favor. Treat it as a long-term obsession and the thin late game will sour you on it; treat it as a bright, low-commitment crawler to share with people you like, dipped into a few levels at a time, and it delivers almost everything it promises. The blocky charm, the readable presentation, and the easy on-ramp make it one of the friendliest entries in a genre that too often gatekeeps newcomers behind spreadsheets. It is not the deepest dungeon crawler you can buy, but it may be the most welcoming, and for a great many players, especially those bringing friends or family along, that welcome is worth more than another hundred hours of grind.

First thing to state, I have played this game on the minecraft launcher for months now; so therefor I have ground to post this review for the new steam audience. Most important thing to know, this game is best played as the Ultimate Edition. The base game is way too short for it's own good. To get the full experience, the Ultimate Edition offers it more properly. Especially for minecraft fans, Ultimate Edition lets players not only play the full campaign, but offers more gear to change up the playstyle and to explore more biome levels and dimensions that we all know and love. Imo, that is my recommendation for everyone new. It costs cheaper than to buy the base game then purchase the dlcs separately. A good introduction to the dungeon crawler genre and great minecraft game. It also includes the expanding lore of minecraft both here and indirectly in the original. Even better with friends For those who are conflicted in purchasing this game, I do understand the feelings. Steam sales are also an alternative as they can make games pretty cheap.Show moreShow less
I would warn you against purchasing this game because it requires a Microsoft account to play and this includes the offline single player mode. I had been looking at this game for quite some time and finally decided to go ahead and purchase it. I assumed the Microsoft account would be for the online or multiplayer aspects of the game and never imagined that your access to this game is entirely dependent on access to this Microsoft account. I created a character, did the tutorial and a few missions before deciding I would come back to it later. When I came back the next day to play it, I found that my access to the game had been entirely revoked and that Microsoft was claiming I had done something illegal / suspicious and therefore my account had been suspended. Apparently just playing this game is suspicious to them. What was suspicious to me, was that Micorsoft wanted me to give them my cell phone number and in exchange, the ban on my account would be lifted. Let's assume I had done something suspicious or otherwise illegal as they claim, if so, why would simply giving them my cell phone number make whatever it was I had done okay again? While it is possible that this message is some form of generic lock / error that you get -- it's troubling that within 48 hours of purchasing the game, I found my ability to play it ENTIRELY blocked, even the offline single player and due to the wording of the it, it basically gives Microsoft a free pass to suspend your access to this game at any time, for any reason. This means that even though you paid VALVE and Mojang for this game, you do not own it and there is no guarantee you will be able to retain access to it because Mojang has chosen to involve Microsoft as a third party. I contacted Mojang and attempted to talk this out with them but their rep basically refused to assist me at all and was deadset on shifting the blame onto Microsoft to spite the fact that it is their game, and offering support is their responsibility. If you involve a third party in your business and that third party negatively impacts your interactions with your customers, it is absolutely your job to handle that problem, it is not the customer's. Upon my telling the rep that, he responded by blocking my ticket and refusing to respond any further. I attempted to contact Microsoft to obtain more information about this situation as well but found that to be impossible to do so, and rightfully so, it's not their job to deal with this, this isn't their game. Microsoft does own Mojang Studios but that does not make them responsible for handling issues concerning access to the game. After discussing this with VALVE over the course of a few days, VALVE agreed to issue a refund to spite my having played this for longer than 2 hours, so I guess the take-away from all of this is at least VALVE was willing to assume some responsibility for this situation because it certainly didn't look like it was possible to get Mojang to due to their rep's attitude. In the end this was all very disappointing to me because from what I did play, the game seems great and I was likely going to enjoy it but I am not okay with spending money on a game that could be taken away from me by a third party at any time with or without reason and with no way to discuss or appeal it.Show moreShow less
Basically a simplified Minecraft themed Diablo. The kids love it and I don't mind playing it, but it's not the sort of thing where I'd say it feels worth grinding for new gearShow moreShow less
buy a game, only to have to perpetually buy expansions to keep playing. And its not like you're getting MMO quality expansions, its literally just 'paying for more dungeons that should be free from a random generator' very unhappy with this purchase.Show moreShow less

Need to be online at all times to play, if you press to play offline you will still need an active internet connection to play. Don't buy it if you intended to play it offline, but otherwise it's really good.Show moreShow less

Love the game, don't get me wrong. Quite ridiculous that you can't play it at all when not connected to intermet. Even if you've launched it in the past. This is the kind of game that's perfect for long car rides, especially on steam deck. It's a shame that it won't function without a connection. Wish there had been some kind of warning on the store page or I likely wouldn't have purchased itShow moreShow less
Better than Minecraft legends.Show moreShow less
