Remember the nights you played Resident Evil Zero on Gamecube? No? I do. This game is right for you ... ... when you walk through a dark corridor and you do not know what to expect around the next corner ... ... when you see a shadow and you do not know if its just furniture or the monster you don't want to meet ... ... when you suddenly hear a creepy moan behind the next wall and you're to scared to move forward ... First of all here are some simple steps to make sure you get the whole creepy experience out of this game: - Use a controller (although you can use the keyboard, which is not really recommendable - atleast for me. I don't like it, you could) - Play at night (or darken your room), you will feel very uncomfortable, trust me - Don't rush the game like hell. Take your time, explore everything and feel yourself into the world. - forget everything about Resident Evil 5, 6, RC:O and similiar games. This is clearly not the same. This is real horror. So what is Resident Evil 0? Resident Evil Zero is the prequel to all the beginning of Resident Evil 1 and the following games. Its the 07.23.1998, the day before the deadly virus was released in Raccoon City. This game is full of interesting puzzles, a good story and an oppressive atmosphere. Pros: +++ Scary game that will make you feel very lonely and lost +++ A good background story about what happened before Resident Evil 1 +++ hours of fun playing this game ++ you can play 2 characters ++ a lot of puzzles + you can choose the difficulty + the new HD graphics + controls + cheap price, for 20 € really worth it neutral (i like these stuff, but there are many people who actually hate this old fashioned gameplay): +- this game can be really challenging and frustrating, especially when you're new to this kind of a game +- characters move very slowly, that is not up to date for a modern game +- camera angles Cons: - unfortunately no new improvement - you have to pay for costumes - some bugs like sometimes audio crashing in cut scenes - if you don't have a good pc this game may run in a slow motion which just feels not smooth - it may cause a heart attack What is special about this game? This Oldschool-Horror Survival Game comes first time with 2 Characters that you can control. (Yes, Resident 5 and so on had also multiple characters). The special thing about these two characters is both of them have their special skills. Rebecca can't take a lot of damage, but she can mix herbs, which can be very useful. Billy got a lighter, which can be helpful for some things. In addition he can take a lot more damage before he will die. In the most time you are playing together, while you can decide with whom you move. You can also decide if your partner will support you in the fight or if he will even follow you or rather stay on his position. This gameplay with both characters CAN make you feel a bit more safe, but don't lean back that much because there will be several situations where you both are lost and on your own, trying to find each other of you. In this case you will feel very lost and desperate. This makes this game so special. You have to keep an eye on both characters, make them survive this game. If one of your characters dies, the game is over. How good is the new HD graphic? While the original Resident Evil Zero on Gamecube was very old fashioned and mushy, this new remastered version comes with some new effects. The game overall looks way better than the old version but you can still see some ugly details which doesn't look that great. Just dont expect too much. It looks just fine, but there is nothing sensational about it. It can be kinda compared with Resident Evil 1 Remastered. My final words: This lets me conclude that this game is really good and it is a REAL Resident Evil. Its not a shooter like the newer games. This game is hard, can be frustrating and brings a lot of fun. You will feel like you felt in Resident Evil 1-3, i will guarantee you. If you never played Resident Evil, but you're a fan of horror-games, then i can also recommend this game for you. For people who want a modern game with a GREAT graphics and a lot of shooting, i really can't recommend this to you, because you might be disapppointed.Show moreShow less
DRM is unacceptable on its own. Retroactively adding DRM to a game years after its release is beyond the pale.Show moreShow less
The person who decided that removing the chest from this game and adding a huge number of story items would be a good idea, I want to address you: I wish you only six slots in your life, two of which would be occupied by a harpoon.Show moreShow less
Recommend if you are dedicated. Other than that, this game will make you wish you would rather jerk it with fiberglass than continue progressing.Show moreShow less
Pros: -HD graphics that bring those pre rendered backgrounds to life. -Two playable characters. -Items can be dropped anywhere. -Classic survival horror. -Challenging gameplay. -Good backround info for Umbrella. -Able to change costumes at any time. Cons: -Lack of item boxes(too much micromanagement) -Would've liked more control options for controllers. -Some of the worst bosses in RE history. -Ending was a letdown but its a prequel so it doesnt have much freedom to expand. Not a masterpiece as the first one,it still holds its own as a genuinely fun and engaging RE title 7.5/10Show moreShow less
Feels like one of those old Atari/arcade games where they're unnecessarily difficult and obtuse to maximize the amount of quarters you have to put in the machine if you want to finish the game. Like seriously, props to anyone that played this when it came out without the internet because the amount of backtracking and ♥♥♥♥♥♥ situations that you can get yourself into is insane. Thought you'd be on a level playing field with the enemies while controlling two characters at once in a forced camera perspective with (optional) tank controls? Best we can do is cramped rooms packed with zombies, sonic speed stun-locking monkeys and hunters, flying bats and crows, excessively clingy leech zombies, and one shot ganking frogs. You thought Rebecca would be the one fighting something in the swimming pool so you gave her all the powerful weapons? Sucks to be you. Now Billy has to fight a giant centipede with a knife. You thought Billy needed to take the hookshot up there? Go back down, you should've just known who needed to do what. You value your time? ♥♥♥♥ you. 10 seconds of unskippable door animations for every 10 seconds it takes you to cross the room. You thought you wouldn't need the 2 slot hookshot anymore in your 6 slot inventory after the train? Go backtrack your way through the training facility you just spent an hour or so clearing to retrieve it, but this time the devs put monkeys everywhere. Oh, did I say 6 slot inventory? I meant 4, can't forget your gun and ammo. Playing as Billy? He's got a knife, so now you have 3 slots. Like carrying a healing item? that's another slot. Carrying a puzzle item? That's another slot. Want an item box to store all this stuff? Throw it on the ground. Like good boss design? Deal with this big bat while a bunch of smaller bats try to give you rabies. How about multiple bosses where you have 2 characters to simultaneously control. All of this is avoidable if you know what's coming, but spoiling yourself to have an enjoyable experience isn't fun, and games are supposed to be fun. Playing this blind on your first playthrough is just asking for a bad time. I genuinely don't even think this is a bad game despite everything above, it has some good qualities and beautifully rendered backgrounds, but it's marred by so many poor decisions. I liked it enough, but I can't recommend this to anyone except dedicated RE fans. Even the positive reviews are negative. Just wait for the remake.Show moreShow less
Resident Evil 0 was in development hell since around the mid 90's, where it was planned for an N64 release but constantly delayed due to issues in storage inherent with 64MB cartridges. The game's development was moved onto the NGC and finally saw release in 2002, and in 2016 an HD Remaster was brought out which fortunately made its way to PC. Let's get one thing out of the way: this is a true HD Remaster; you can easily google comparison shots. Short story: this isn't just upscaling-it really does look much better than the previous version. Reason being that they pre-render shots for these classic RE titles, and the assets they had beforehand were actually really high quality and 'downscaled' to Gamecube hardware. So here we're getting a bit more of how it originally looked before being filtered down. I start with a bit of a history lesson for some context: this is basically old Capcom. This is an RE title from the same Capcom that was at its zenith in the late 90's to mid 2000's. If you enjoyed the RE titles pre-4 (not that 4 was bad or anything) then this is more of the same in similar quality. This game was born in a specific time-period whereby quality was of a particular level. RE0, as you may have guessed, is a prologue to RE1. It's plot concerns the same cast of characters within Racoon City, and if you like your RE lore you'll enjoy this, albeit there's nothing incredible nor is there a huge revelation here. Rebecca is the star here, along with Billy, an escaped convict. Can't say I'm particularly satisfied with the plot since there was no underground lab as there was in RE1, or family members turned into monsters. There's nothing particularly gripping in the plot, and it all seems to end rather abruptly, but it still holds well as a stand-alone tale. Just don't expect anything amazing. The game itself is more of what you'd expect: pre-rendered backgrounds and fixed camera angles with, lets face it, god-awful combat. There's nothing worse than moving back a bit and the camera angle switching because of it. RE has never been a series known for its combat, the challenge is in exploring the map and solving puzzles. The tension is in the cinematic camera angles and not knowing whether the next room has an enemy. The fun is in managing your inventory space and running low on ammo. But the fun in RE titles and its are of specialization has never been in its shooting mechanics. Luckily, the game has a button assigned for auto targetting-one push and you automatically target an enemy on the screen. This saves the whole thing: you don't have to worry about losing your target and being impeded in any way by the fixed angles. You get to keep a unique feature and alleviate its short-comings-problem solved. The partner system is unique and changes things up a bit; ultimately your partner character is really just more storage slots for items when you're together, but you are often seperated and have to work things out until you can meet up once more. It's different, it's not ground-breaking, but it adds some interest to an otherwise similar approach to the formula. You can also drop items on the floor and return to pick them up; gone are those magic boxes that store all of your items. Personally I'm not for it, since you wind up having to backtrack if you leave something important far behind (protip: always keep the grappling hook nearby until you activate the cable car). You wind up leaving items in save rooms anyway so I'm not for it, but it does allow you to just drop an item then and there if you need to pick something else up. It's an interesting idea, but one that needs a bit more refining. All in all I can't complain; this is from classic Capcom and it shows. It also shows that this is a prologue game that doesn't build too much, but this is also from Capcom's peak so even that is fantastic. Strongly recommended if you loved old RE. Waiting on remakes of RE2 and RE3, Capcom.Show moreShow less
With RE4 remake coming I wanted to play all the RE games on PC again, starting with Zero. As far as I liked this game back then, I can only recommend it to hardcore RE fans, because it has way too many flaws. Good : - graphics - atmosphere - sound design - playing as a duo is a good idea, with potientially interesting puzzles Bad : - controls and aiming are weird, it's often hard to tell were you're gonna shoot. Given how precious ammo is, it's really annoying to see the character lock on a spider but when you shoot the grenade/molotov/whatever, it misses - monkeys - leechmen - molotovs seem completely useless - handguns are only useful against weak zombies, and they're quickly replaced by way stronger enemies. - monkeys stunlock - the game is based on trial and error. You never know what's coming, what weapon you'll need, how much inventory space you'll need, which objects you'll need. Most of the time you'll have to progress a bit, make mistakes, reload, go back to the room you left the weapon/item you need, and try again. - leechmen - the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ boiler room with the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ monkeys to save the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Rebecca can burn in hell - in RE you're not supposed to kill everything, you have to run and avoid enemies. But what happens in a game with a partner AI ? Yep, they either try to fight and waste ammo, or they get hit/grabbed while running and you have to save them. This means that the "safe" way to play is to use one character, advance until the next safe room, and then play with the other character, basically forcing you to play some sections twice. - insta-death from frogs, lock-on doesn't work on them - even on normal, this game is way too hard. Better do your first run on easy, it'll be less frustrating. Enemies are too fast compared to the sloooooow movement, aiming, firing and reloading of the characters, and they soak up a lot of damage. - no item box, you have to leave items on the floor, and there are only a limited amount of "slots" in each room. This makes inventory management a real pita. - insta-death from frogs with your partner AI watching you die without shooting for some reason - being a prequel, the writers already knew what would happen next, so they just tried to shoehorn some excuses for it to happen. The story is rather bad, and the villain even worse. Not even Paul WS Anderson would have used a villain controlling leeches by singing opera. - did I mention monkeys ?Show moreShow less
+Nice visual and port (except cutsences) +Nice control +Nice story +2 playable characters (nice for puzzle and fight) +Bring back old memories of old RE -Where is RE 2&3? recommendShow moreShow less
♥♥♥♥ Capcom. Don't buy from these pieces of ♥♥♥♥. They keep ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ over buyers, the people that actually support them, for no reason. They added DRM to a lot of games, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ over performance, mods, and game stability. All of this is because they believe modding is cheating! IN A SINGLE PLAYER GAME! You know the difference between me and someone who pirated this game? The pirate has a more stable game, with better performance, and is able to mod it/alter the files however he wants. Wow. Thanks ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.Show moreShow less
