A rotating-wheel build sandbox with real ideas, wrecked at launch by server crashes and the imbalance it never tamed

Our Verdict

Wolcen is a story about timing — it read the gap in the market perfectly, then fumbled the chance it had made for itself.

It slipped through the looter genre's emptiest window

Character and skill showcase in Wolcen

To grasp how a game scoring just 60 still sold a million copies in a month, rewind to the looter market of early 2020. It was a lull. Diablo IV had only just been announced, no release date in sight; Path of Exile reigned as the free, evergreen heavyweight, but its steep learning curve and spiderweb passive board walled out the crowd that wanted to farm gear without doing homework; Diablo III was years old. Wolcen dropped straight into that gap — Diablo-grade flash and impact, a differentiated pitch in the Gate of Fates and its classless build freedom, and a buy-to-play single-player tag. For players fed up with Path of Exile's complexity yet unwilling to wait on Diablo IV, it was very nearly the only new thing on the shelf.

A million sales and 17.4 million hours logged prove one thing: the appetite for free-build looters is real and large. But that number measures market hunger, not product quality — keep the two apart. The crashed launch weekend, stacked on top of broken balance, triggered a merciless first-impression effect: impulse buyers refunded inside the window, and many more prospects retreated into a permanent wait-and-see. Wolcen caught the surge of demand and lacked the means to hold the people it drew, and a game gets exactly one first impression — Wolcen spent its only one on a weekend the servers were down.

Who it is for, who should walk away, and what you get today

So in 2026, who is this for? The answer is clean. If you crave Path of Exile's "assemble a build nobody else runs" freedom but cannot stomach the wall it puts up for newcomers, then Wolcen — with a far friendlier visual take on that idea through the Gate of Fates — is a worthwhile middle path. Spinning the wheel carries a puzzle-solver's satisfaction you will not find elsewhere. Who should steer clear? Anyone who wants a hassle-free, day-one-perfect experience and has no patience to sit through a game's long repair arc. Wolcen's pleasures are gated, flawed, and only surrender to a player willing to dig into the systems; it was never an out-of-the-box rush. The good news is that the version you boot today is far more whole than the one that launched. The base game already folds in every free update, Bloodtrail included, no season pass required — what you get is the shape after nearly a year of patches, with stable servers, the worst exploits sealed, a Gate of Fates a hundred nodes richer, and an endgame that finally holds together. A 6.0 overall is the most honest number once you weigh the irreplaceable Gate of Fates, the real market demand, and the launch reputation it shattered with its own hands. Wolcen proved the free-build looter road is walkable. It just turned out that the ones who paved it smooth came later.
