“Want to finally start Final Fantasy VII on PC? This is the most complete way in: it stretches the Midgar opening into 30-plus hours, gives even bit players like Biggs and Jessie real arcs, and bundles the Yuffie episode free. Just accept the story stops at Midgar.”
Il nostro verdetto
The scores agree: one of the best modern Final Fantasy entries
Line the numbers up and the verdict is clear. OpenCritic sits at 86.5 with a 93.1% recommendation rate, slotting the game into the top "Mighty" tier and the 95th percentile site-wide. IGDB's media aggregate reads 91.7. Steam holds 88% positive, tagged Very Positive. On the Chinese side, GamerSky gave it 8.2, TGBus 8.5, and IGN China handed the Yuffie episode an 8.

Outlets weigh things differently, but every score lands somewhere between "excellent" and "outstanding," and none of them docked it into negative territory. That consensus across Western and Chinese press plants it firmly among the best modern Final Fantasy games, and the rare cross-region agreement matters — these are critics who often diverge sharply on Japanese tentpole releases, yet here they barely do. The recurring deductions cluster just as tightly: the story is incomplete, ending at Midgar, and the PC graphics menu is thin. Almost nobody quarreled with the core itself.
Who should buy it, and who should think twice
Two kinds of players are the perfect fit. First, anyone who wants to finally play — or replay — Final Fantasy VII on PC: this is the most complete way in, Yuffie episode and official Chinese localization included. Second, players who love that "slash while you calculate" action-RPG combat and also care about narrative density. For them, there's almost nothing to pick at across these thirty-plus hours.

Two groups should pause. The first wants the entire planet-spanning journey in one go — this one stops at Midgar and strands you right at the climax, and anyone allergic to a trilogy sold in pieces will chafe. The second plays only on mouse and keyboard — the action combat truly comes alive on a controller, and the keyboard route is a clear step down. As for which version, there's no suspense: on PC, grab the Steam release with the Yuffie episode built in, and play it on a pad. There's no premium edition to agonize over and no season pass dangling extra story behind a paywall — the Steam build is the whole package, Yuffie and Simplified Chinese included, and a controller turns the one rough edge smooth.
The thing rivals can't copy is the nerve to take a prologue seriously
Back to the opening question: looking from 2026, what still holds this game up? Not the visuals, not the combat, but an attitude. It dared to treat an opening that ran a few hours in the original as a full standalone work, handing every once-glossed-over side character — Biggs, Wedge, and Jessie above all — a complete arc of their own. Against Final Fantasy XV's transition, which thinned out the further it went and patched its narrative with later content, this game pulled off the thankless task of doing one prologue thoroughly, and did it memorably. That willingness to spend thirty-plus hours on supporting players and small details is the part nobody else can easily lift. It's incomplete, yet it's good enough; it's only a prologue, yet it already plays like the main feature.
Set it in the wider action-RPG landscape and the case gets stronger. On PC in 2022 there was barely another game of this scale that could trade blows with it on combat depth and production values at once; the only real points of comparison are its own sequel, Rebirth, and the studio's own Final Fantasy XVI, and both came later. For anyone who simply wants to experience a modernized Midgar chapter on PC, this edition is the best option on the table right now. All you have to settle, before you commit, is whether you can live with the story ending where it does. If you can, it will hardly let you down — and if the Whispers and the cliffhanger leave you itching for what comes next, that's less a complaint than the clearest proof the game did its job.
