A hardcore farming sandbox that drops hundreds of real machines into your hands and lives on through its mods

編集部の総評

Middling reviews, lasting sales: a quietly underrated win

Rewind to 2018 and the launch reception was flat. A 73 on Metacritic, a 70 on OpenCritic — "fair" by the industry's own grading, with barely half the critics willing to recommend it. Judge it on those numbers alone and you would file it away with that year's quickly forgotten middle of the pack.

A panoramic view of the working farm

It is the kind of score that ages strangely. A 73 looked unremarkable in 2018 and looks even smaller now beside the year's marquee titles, yet the game it was pinned to is still being played, modded, and recommended years later. Numbers like that capture a launch-week impression; they are poor at capturing a slow burn.

The actual market told the opposite story. Ten days after release, combined digital and retail sales had cleared a million copies and set a new series record; before long it pushed past two million. To this day it holds a 94 percent positive rating across more than sixty thousand Steam reviews.

That sharp split — tepid scores, durable sales — says plainly that the people buying it and the people scoring it were never working from the same rubric. Critics measure a game against the broad sweep of what released that year; this crowd measures it against how many quiet hours it can soak up. Players wanted a true farming loop they could pour a hundred-plus hours into, not a story-led blockbuster they would finish in a week, and on that single yardstick the game scores far higher than any 73 suggests.

Who it's for, who should walk away: a clearly divided audience

So who is it actually for? The answer is refreshingly clear. If you enjoy starting from a bare plot and slowly building a farm one machine and one field at a time, willing to pay the price of that near-obsessive realism, it has a satisfaction for you that is hard to find elsewhere — whether you are a hardcore player chasing maximum fidelity or a casual one who just wants to zone out behind a tractor.

Choosing a starting map

Turn it around, and if what you want is snappy combat, cinematic storytelling, or a game you can finish over a weekend, walk straight past — the steep learning curve and heavy repetition are all but certain to send you packing. It never tries to please everyone, and that clear-eyed niche focus is exactly why it serves its small, loyal audience so well. Tellingly, because it is so honest about who it turns away, the players who do stay are fiercely loyal, which explains why a crowd of seasoned farmers shows up on schedule for every new entry the series ships.

What can't be replaced, in the end, is the authenticity of dropping John Deere and a roster of real brands, hundreds of machines and all, into the game untouched. Pure Farming 2018, the same-year competitor that wanted a slice of the same field, fell short on vehicle licensing, map scale, and mod ecosystem alike, and was left far behind by this game's commercial run almost from day one. For the players who genuinely love the land and the machinery, Farming Simulator 19 isn't an optional purchase. It is a landmark you can't easily go around.
