“A bold 3D shift for the franchise, trading fixed cameras for open-zone stealth evasion across a vivid neon amusement park, held back by loose guidance and shaky optimization.”

編集部の総評

A pivot that wears its ambition and its flaws in plain sight

Panoramic night view of the neon Pizzaplex

Pull every dimension together and Security Breach is a franchise pivot whose strengths and faults sit right out in the open. The middle-of-the-road OpenCritic 72 and Metacritic 73 capture its situation neatly, the score of a game that does several things memorably and several things badly in roughly equal measure. It owns a handful of genuinely persuasive atmosphere beats: the chokehold of an upright animatronic working a backstage corridor through pure positioning, the warehouse where a giant animatronic head pins you with sheer mass, the broken rabbit figure leaning out of a crack in the dark. Those moments prove Steel Wool understands mood-driven horror at a level the launch discourse rarely gave it credit for. At the same time, the optimization collapse at release, the muddy guidance, and the misfiring stealth detection keep interrupting those very moments, and the result is a game that constantly shows you what it could have been before yanking the experience away. Living with it means accepting that the highs and the lows arrive in the same breath.

The launch-crash, long-recovery curve

That reputation arc deserves its own line. Critic scores froze mid-pack, yet Steam's long-tail rating recovered to 86% Very Positive across more than 64,000 reviews, and worldwide sales pushed past 1.4 million copies. Once patches had repaired most of the hard breakages and players let go of their launch-day expectations, that large-space stealth-evasion loop clearly hooked a sizable crowd; the people it grabs, it grabs hard. The number on the box never recovered, but the audience did, which is its own kind of verdict on whether the underlying idea was sound. Placed inside the series' arc, the pivot matters more than its score suggests: it is the first proof that a once-tiny indie jumpscare IP can carry a full-scale exploration-horror park, even if the first landing stumbled badly enough to bruise. Whatever its rough edges, this is the game that redrew the map for where the franchise could go next, and the free Ruin expansion that followed only underlined that the studio intended to keep building on the foundation rather than walk away from it.

Who should buy it, and who should steer clear

So who should buy it? If you like atmospheric survival horror, can tolerate the occasional bout of getting lost and backtracking, and want an exploration-and-evasion loop that forces you to find your own way and hide on your own terms, the core play is worth a try. Series veterans should not miss it at all; the wall-to-wall callbacks are a feast served straight to you, and the lore payoff alone justifies the ticket for anyone already invested in the mythology. Its most valuable asset is exactly that loop, rebuilt wholesale from watching cameras to running the floor, and when it behaves it is genuinely addictive, the kind of tension that has you mapping sightlines and rehearsing escape routes in your head between sessions. There is a real game in here once the systems cooperate, and on a patched build they cooperate far more often than the launch reviews would suggest.

Who should steer clear is just as obvious. If you place a high premium on clear progression guidance and technical stability, or you want storytelling delivered whole and direct rather than pieced together from fragments, this game will repeatedly break your immersion. It plays less like a carefully choreographed haunted-house corridor and more like a park that turns you loose to wander, and players who like being led and hate getting lost will run out of patience fast. The buying advice is pragmatic: most of the hard bugs are patched now, the free Ruin expansion is bundled in, and waiting for a sale is the highest-value way in. Across every dimension it settles at 7.0, a pivot whose atmosphere and ambition are loud and whose completion holds it back. A shame, and still worth a look.
