“A samurai film you can play — Sucker Punch's open world, sharpened by a near-flawless Nixxes port into the definitive way to ride out this snowbound tale of revenge”

編集部の総評

One island, one signature — where it stands in the medium

Look back and Tsushima carries more weight than many expected of it.

Iconic Tsushima vista

On its console release in 2020 it took Game of the Year from the National Academy of Video Game Trade Reviewers, leading every title that year with 14 wins, and drew Game of the Year nominations at both the Game Awards and the D.I.C.E. ceremony. The top prize went to The Last of Us Part II, but standing toe-to-toe with that game says plenty on its own. The sales say more: the series has now moved over 13 million copies, one of Sony's most successful brand-new IPs in years — successful enough to greenlight a sequel outright. Sequels, remakes, and spin-offs are the easy part; the hard part is conjuring a brand-new world out of nothing that players remember and will happily pay to revisit. For a fresh IP to reach this height on its first outing is no fluke — it is art, story, music, and combat all built tall enough to hold the whole pail of water. Few studios get a swing this confident at an original setting, and fewer still connect; Sucker Punch did, and the medium is richer for it.

Who should buy, who should wait — straight talk up front

So, down to specifics: who is this actually for?

Jin standing in the wind

If you are wired for this — sunk into the samurai fantasy, sold on art and combat feel, and untroubled by the classic open-world exploration loop — you can buy in blind. PC players with an ultrawide or a high-refresh panel especially: this version hands you spectacle the console never could, and even if you cleared it on PS5 back then, a second run for mouse-and-keyboard, high frames, and that wide canvas is no waste. Flip it around, though. If you cannot stand clearing camps and farming collectibles, or what you really want is a tight, linear, level-driven ride, Tsushima's soft opening and mid-game repetition may grind your patience down. It asks you to slow down, to pause for a view and linger over a myth; come hunting only for high-intensity thrills and the shortest line to the credits, and most of what is good here will pass you by. The game rewards the player who is content to ride slowly across a field at dusk far more than the one sprinting between objective markers. Better, then, to set it aside and come back the day you feel like settling in for a proper samurai film — the experience lands completely differently.

The thing that cannot be copied — and the best gift for PC players

Back to the root question: after all these years, what keeps Tsushima from being replaced?

Kurosawa mode closing frame

The answer hides in no single spec sheet but in the breath that runs through the whole thing. It folds Kurosawa's framing, the wind-as-compass conceit, and that black-and-white film grain into the open-world frame everyone had already worn to death, and mixes a flavour nobody else can reproduce. Tech can be caught, maps can be drawn bigger, quests can be stacked higher — but that sustained aesthetic nerve is not something money buys. Assassin's Creed Valhalla has the larger map and the longer quest log, and lacks precisely this restrained, exact aesthetic breath; it gives you everything except the conviction that less is more. That is Tsushima's amulet against being copied. And the PC Director's Cut preserves that breath most fully: a complete edition with Iki Island and Legends folded in, carried, of course, by a near-perfect Nixxes port. If you have been waiting for the best possible moment to finally set foot on the island of Tsushima, then this is unmistakably it.
