Permanent death, a single character slot, and Unreal Engine 4 rainforest immersion make this the hardcore realistic dinosaur survival benchmark

編集部の総評

A Ten-Year Marathon: The Founder of a Lane

The Isle's place in the history of dinosaur survival games is genuinely singular. It is not a universal phenomenon in the way of a building-block megahit, nor is it a "dinosaurs plus survival" everything-bagel like ARK Survival. It is a hardcore, simulation-grade sandbox laser-focused on "playing as a dinosaur and staying alive," and in doing so it founded an entirely new sub-genre: multiplayer dinosaur survival. When Afterthought founder Dondi proposed this concept in 2015, there was no precedent to follow. Ten years on, the lane he opened now holds Path of Titans, Beasts of Bermuda, Saurian and other peers — but all of them were inspired by The Isle. That "founder of the lane" standing is the single most valuable asset of the ten-year marathon.

The 98,000-odd reviews holding a 77% positive rating on Steam are, for a game carrying ten years of Early Access plus the Dondi controversy plus the Legacy split, remarkably steady data. By comparison, Path of Titans formally launched back in 2022 and Beasts of Bermuda in 2018, while The Isle is still in Early Access after ten years. Yet that 77% says the product's core experience is strong enough that, even with disputes over development pace and questions of trust in the studio, players keep playing and keep leaving positive marks. This "love it and resent it at once" posture is the steady state of the community. The Dondi controversy is an unavoidable reality of any overall verdict — the sweeping 2020 accusations around team member misconduct, financial management, and communication style cost the studio a portion of player trust and visibly slowed progress without ending it. For a prospective buyer, grasping that backdrop matters more than the number itself, because you are buying not only a game but, to a degree, an investment in a contested studio's continued work.

Target Player and the Inverse Portrait

The target portrait is clear: the hardcore player who wants simulation-grade dinosaur survival plus high-risk PVP tension. If you have previously played a permadeath multiplayer game, or care about documentary-grade dinosaur models, or are willing to sink 100-plus hours into learning one game, The Isle is close to a must-buy. The inverse portrait is just as clear. Players with zero tolerance for permadeath will be driven off within the first ten hours of consecutive deaths; traditionalists who want quest-driven story and clear win conditions will lose their bearings fast in Spiro Island's aimless environment; and players who hold a strong moral position on the Dondi controversy may choose not to support the game at all. One more group deserves a separate warning: complete newcomers to dinosaur survival are better off playing Path of Titans first to learn the basic loop, then switching to The Isle for the hardcore simulation version.

The 2026 purchase path is simple — the default Steam edition at 19.99 dollars, no paid DLC, all content pushed free, the best value-per-hour in the lane. The recommended onboarding: switch to the Evrima branch through Steam beta, start practicing on a small dinosaur like the hypsilophodon rather than charging straight at a tyrant-class predator, and live a few lives on a newcomer-friendly server before migrating to high-skill PVP. The replaceability verdict returns to the angle's core: permadeath plus a single character slot plus 27 finely crafted dinosaur models plus UE4 rainforest immersion are four things nobody has truly replicated in ten years. Path of Titans chose the opposite road and traded tension for friendliness; Beasts of Bermuda has serious balance problems; Saurian's content is too thin; ARK is a dinosaur-survival hybrid rather than true dinosaur survival. For the hardcore dinosaur player, The Isle remains, as of 2026, the only mature simulation-grade dinosaur survival sandbox — and even with the Dondi controversy and the reality of ten years in Early Access, its core experience still has no real substitute.
