For the first time the hunt's read-the-monster mind game goes turn-based: you call whether a beast leads with Power, Technical or Speed, then release Monsties to revive a habitat. Want a grown-up tale wrapped around breeding you can tinker with? This is it, just know multiplayer and endgame are gone.

編集部の総評

The best-reviewed entry in the trilogy finally earns the word "Stories"

Pull back and this is the highest the Monster Hunter Stories line has ever stood with critics. OpenCritic landed it at 85 with a "Mighty" rating, inside the top 5% of all games; Metacritic sits at 87. IGN, GameSpot, and a stack of other outlets handed out 9s, and RPGFan went as high as 92. Behind those numbers is a single consensus: it is no longer a side dish to the mainline, it's a main course that can stand on its own.

A consensus of strong scores

My own takeaway is that it finally deserves the name "Stories." The sub-series has always been built around narrative, but the first two chapters couldn't quite carry the billing; only here, with mature writing, a sturdy cast, and tightly meshed systems all arriving at once, does it become a genuine "Monster Hunter that leads with story" rather than a leveling treadmill wearing a story for a coat. That shift reads like a quality bump on paper, but it's really a repositioning — from here on it has the standing to sit at the same table as mainline single-player JRPGs, instead of only ever being measured against its own predecessors.

Who should buy it, and who should walk on by

So who's it for? If you want a mature hero's-journey tale wrapped around breeding-and-collecting systems you can keep digging into, and the turn-based cadence doesn't put you off, this is practically tailored to you. Anyone who enjoys the Pokémon or Digimon Story brand of taming but finds their storytelling too featherweight will discover something with real heft here.

The audience it's built for

Two groups should think twice, though. The first is anyone chasing the mainline's action-hunting feel — this is turn-based, not an action game, and the dodging, positioning, and real-time damage output you're picturing run on an entirely different logic. Going in expecting World or Wilds and getting a menu-driven RPG is a recipe for disappointment, so be honest with yourself about what you actually want. The second is the hardcore crowd for whom multiplayer and a high-rank endgame are the whole point; as covered, both are gone here, and you'll hit the content wall fast once the credits roll, with no co-op grind to fall back into.

Which edition to grab, and the one thing rivals can't copy

The buying call is simple: Standard at ¥298 is plenty.

Deluxe and Premium Deluxe only add cosmetic outfits and accessories with no real bearing on the experience, so there's no need to pay up for looks. If you're genuinely unsure, go play that save-carrying free trial first and verify the goods at zero cost before a single yen leaves your wallet.

What, then, is the thing rivals can't lift? It's the chemistry between two systems sitting side by side: the triangle reading game and Habitat Restoration. Folding Monster Hunter's hunt into turn-based form is novel enough on its own; then handing you a garden where you personally revive a whole self-breeding ecosystem — upgrading "taming" from catching pets to building a biome — is the part I haven't seen done elsewhere in a turn-based taming RPG. Its direct rival is its own predecessor, Wings of Ruin, and that game lost on softer, younger writing and loose system cohesion; this one tightens both story and breeding visibly. All told, it's an 8.7 from me — a decisive, confident reinvention that knew exactly what to cut.
