Speculation over FF17 started circulating during a recent Final Fantasy XIV European Fan Festival stage event. Naoki Yoshida, producer of FFXIV and Final Fantasy XVI and an executive director at Square Enix, invited Final Fantasy VII Remake series director Naoki Hamaguchi onstage. The two were there to discuss a new Final Fantasy VII Remake collaboration dungeon for the new expansion, but the exchange quickly brushed against a question fans have already been circling: who might lead Final Fantasy 17?

No announcement was made. This was carefully steered stage banter. Yoshida told the audience that many fans in the comments wanted to see Hamaguchi make FF17. When Hamaguchi began to respond, Yoshida immediately cut him off and stopped him before he could continue. The telling part was not the suggestion itself. It was Yoshida's quick "No, no, absolutely do not say it" reaction.
It is easy to see why players read into it. Hamaguchi is the director of the Final Fantasy VII Remake series, and that credit matters. Yoshida, meanwhile, is one of the central figures behind Final Fantasy XIV and Final Fantasy XVI. Put those two on the same stage near a joke about the next numbered entry, and players will start weighing every pause.

For now, though, it is still only speculation. The original report is explicit on that point: neither Yoshida nor Hamaguchi confirmed onstage that Hamaguchi is involved in Final Fantasy 17. Yoshida's interruption could have been a joke. It could also have been the instinct of someone used to saying nothing about unannounced work. Without a project title, a role, or a timeline, it cannot be treated as a full news break.
What Square Enix needs next is not another tease, but a direction. Final Fantasy XVI pushed the series further into action. Final Fantasy VII Remake rebuilt a classic through a segmented, restructured format. Whoever takes charge of the next mainline game will be doing more than filling a producer or director credit. That choice will shape the combat system, narrative structure, and the series' wider identity.

That is why the community reaction is not only about Hamaguchi. Players are asking where Final Fantasy goes from here. Yoshida represents years of live-service leadership alongside big-budget single-player production. Hamaguchi represents the modernization of a classic and a clear eye for modern cinematic storytelling. Either route would carry real expectations from a series still testing what it wants to be.
The safest read is still simple: this was a meaningful stage joke, not an FF17 production announcement. It is worth watching, but not worth treating as a decision already made. The real starting point comes only when Square Enix says so officially.
