Red Dead Redemption physical edition dated for May 29, 2026
Rockstar has updated the European physical release plan for Red Dead Redemption, and the new schedule puts both the PS5 and Switch 2 versions on May 29, 2026, according to leaker billbil-kun. The same report says the Switch 2 “physical edition” will not include a cartridge at all, only a paper insert printed with a redemption code.

That detail changes the meaning of “physical” in a fairly important way. The PS5 version is a standard boxed disc release, which makes it a normal choice for collecting, backing up, or gifting. The Switch 2 version, by contrast, is physical in packaging only. Since it contains a code slip instead of a cartridge, it functions more like a boxed download code than a true cartridge release.
For the community, though, the bigger question is not Red Dead Redemption itself. Players are still waiting for news on a next-gen upgrade for Red Dead Redemption 2, and there is still nothing official on that front. In that context, the updated release plan for the first game feels more like a side note than the headline people really wanted.
Rockstar’s move does still reinforce one thing: the company is continuing to protect the long-term value of the Red Dead brand. If you already played the first game, May 29, 2026 looks more like a convenient time to buy in again than a must-buy launch moment. If you just want something that looks good on a shelf, the Switch 2 version may work. If you care about a complete physical release, though, the PS5 disc is the safer pick.
