The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remake Launches September 29, 2026

CD Projekt Red confirmed during a developer livestream that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remake launches on September 29, 2026, for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. The studio also promised a free upgrade for anyone who already owns the original on PC or a modern console.

That free upgrade reads less like charity and more like a strategic opening move. CDPR already upgraded base-game owners to the Complete Edition, bundling Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, so returning players have almost no sunk cost to protect. For them, the remake is a no-strings-attached win. Newcomers face a harder choice: pay full price at launch, or wait for the original's next discount and skip the visual overhaul.

The bigger shift is official mod support on consoles for the first time. Players must register at mod.io and link that account to their CDPR profile before installing anything. The initial list has been approved by the platform holders and includes boat races, glowing Witcher eyes, a Gwent mod, armored hoods, and new hairstyles. Most of it is cosmetic; only the boat-race mod meaningfully changes what you actually do. The real question is the catalog. Console players will get fewer mods than on PC, and the pace of approvals will determine whether this becomes a living mod scene or a curated museum.

On the design side, the remake adds toggles that disable gear durability, remove item weight limits, auto-loot, and grant unlimited inventory space. These are better understood as optional house rules than as an "easy mode." They let players choose between survival pressure and a cleaner path through the story and choices, minus the busywork.

For PS5 Pro, the performance mode now runs with an unlocked framerate that reaches up to 90 FPS, alongside full PSSR support that preserves core ray-tracing effects while boosting overall performance. Smoother combat is welcome, but it does not rewrite the quest branching, dialogue trees, or character relationships that drive the game. A higher frame rate polishes the same game; it does not redesign it.

The same livestream pushed the next mainline Witcher game—starring Ciri—back to 2028. That timeline reframes the remake as a way to keep the IP warm rather than as the start of a new chapter. Existing owners should just claim the free upgrade on September 29. Newcomers are better off waiting for post-launch impressions or buying the original at a discount. The console mod catalog and PSSR performance both need to prove themselves after launch before we know what this version actually is.
