Metro Exodus - The Two Colonels

PC
Following the journey and experiences of Khlebnikov during the last days of life in Novosibirsk, retraced by Colonel Miller a year later, players can expect the classic story-driven gameplay of the Metro series in this new linear chapter, complete with a brand new weapon, the deadly flame-thrower, claustrophobic environments, and the all-too-familiar hair-raising tension.

It welds scavenging, filter-timing survival and campfire companionship into one post-apocalyptic train journey across four seasons

Nasz werdykt

Lay every dimension out and the game reads as one of standout strengths and admirably honest limits.

A pivot that worked, at a price

The end of the journey

In the long view, this is the closing chapter of the Metro trilogy and the series' most daring pivot. It drives the franchise out of the tunnels' linear dread and up into semi-open surface exploration, a different animal entirely from the claustrophobic purity of Last Light. The pivot worked — a Strong 83 at OpenCritic, an 85 on Metacritic for the Enhanced Edition — but it cost something: the surface's open zones dilute the breath-held, every-step-counts pressure the earlier games traded in. It chose breadth over purity, and lived with the trade — a gamble that, on balance, plainly paid off for both the series and the genre.

Its reputation splits clean in two. One pole is atmosphere, visuals, story and sound, showered with near-universal praise, the Enhanced Edition's ray tracing cited again and again as an industry yardstick; the other is raw stand-up confrontation, its acknowledged weak spot and the lone reason it missed a perfect mark. Grasp that split and you can read your own verdict: whether you come for mood and story or for combat thrills will steer you to opposite answers.

Who should board, and who should pass

The Aurora rolls on

The buyer is easy to picture. You want immersion and an affecting story over a slick, fast-twitch shooter, and you will swallow a slow pace and careful resource management for the sake of that "hauling a trainload through the apocalypse" truth. Meet those terms and the game pays out something close to a flawless experience.

The player who should pass is just as clear. If you only want top-shelf confrontation feel, cannot abide a slow lead, and have no patience for nursing supplies and filters in a backpack, the play here will let you down — the combat does not reach the era's front rank, and that is simply a fact. This is not a game you blast through on a lunch break; it asks for patience and pays the patient back, and if that bargain sounds like a chore rather than a draw, your money is better spent elsewhere.

The version call is short: take the Enhanced Edition. It is a free upgrade; PC players want a hardware ray-tracing card, console players are best served on PS5 or Xbox Series X/S. The original's rasterised look is dated, with no reason left to touch it, and the Enhanced lighting is so central to the mood that playing the old build genuinely sells the game short. In the end, what nobody has copied is the way Exodus welds scavenging, filter-timing survival and campfire companionship into one year-long train ride across four seasons. Fallout 4 hands you a freer wasteland but never that tight run of feeling strung along a train and the turning seasons. The immersion of this trip has gone unmatched since — and that is the reason to climb aboard.
