Bolt a junk car together part by part, then survive Finnish-countryside permadeath — a stubbornly authentic sim nobody has copied in nine years

Nasz werdykt

A cult landmark built on word of mouth

An acclaimed Satsuma driving shot

In the world of the mainstream press, My Summer Car is all but invisible — no Metacritic aggregate, no OpenCritic page, no flood of professional reviews. In the world of players, it is a monument. 94% positive on Steam across more than a hundred thousand reviews; a charge up the charts and a "trending" tag after the full release; nine years and the word of mouth still has not cooled. That sharp split — cold with critics, hot with the crowd — is the perfect caption for its cult status. This reputation was not bought. It was voted in, one purchase and one thousand-hour save at a time, by a hundred thousand players.

Its cultural standing is a matter of record, too. In 2017 it took the People's Choice Game of the Year for 2016 at the Finnish Game Awards, and in 2018 it was inducted into the Finnish Museum of Games' roster of notable national titles. A crude, awkward little indie earning that kind of recognition in its own homeland comes down to one thing: an irreplaceable sense of place and a purity of design that no committee could manufacture.

It is worth dwelling on how rare that combination is. Plenty of games are beloved; far fewer are beloved while actively refusing to be likeable. My Summer Car never softens its edges to win you over — and the loyalty it inspires is, if anything, fiercer for it. The players who love it do not love it in spite of the friction. They love it because of the friction.

Who should buy it, who should not, and why it cannot be copied

A Finnish summer's endless daylight

So who is this actually for? If you relish puzzling out hardcore systems on your own, if you can find pleasure in the slow rhythm of torquing bolts, scraping cash together, and staying off the beer, and if you draw satisfaction from failing and restarting and failing again, then My Summer Car will be a one-of-a-kind fixture in your library. What it offers is not the instant hit of fun but something closer to meditative — the deep contentment of having sorted it all out with your own two hands.

And who should steer well clear? If you want instant feedback, clear objectives, and a clean trail of quest markers, if the frustration of permadeath grates and you have no patience for an opening designed to throw you off, then walk past it without a backward glance. This is not a game for everyone, and the developer never once set out to please everyone. Granting it that is, in fact, the highest respect you can pay it. Trying to meet it halfway — modding the difficulty down, treating it like a casual sandbox — tends to sand off the very thing that makes it worth playing. It is an all-or-nothing proposition, and it is honest about that from the first minute.

Which brings us back to the core question: why has nothing managed to copy it in all this time? The answer is an obsessive combination — bolt-level physical simulation, layered with Finnish-countryside permadeath survival, wrapped in an atmosphere only a Finn could have built. Its main rival, Car Mechanic Simulator, loses precisely because it reduced assembly to a simplified point-and-click and lacks the atmospheric density of an entire rural Finland transplanted into a game. Nearly nine years on, no single game does all three of those things at once. That is the moat around My Summer Car that is hardest to take — and the reason it has earned the words "cult classic." It may never be a crowd favourite, but to the people who find their way to it, there is nothing else like it.
