“Cold light and shadow wrap a wordless story while tight stealth and puzzles deliver a short, sharp, unforgettable nightmare worth one focused evening.”
Nosso veredito
A short dream that knows exactly what it is
INSIDE is a four-to-six-hour, wordless puzzle-platformer that earns its Metacritic 87, its OpenCritic 91.1, its 97% Steam approval, and its 2016 Game Awards Best Independent Game and 2017 BAFTA Artistic Achievement wins by doing one thing with total conviction. It has no interest in a world you can settle into or in systems and numbers that pull you back; it wants to use a single evening to leave a few indelible afterimages — the chicks trailing through the rain-soaked cornfield, the figure hanging upside down in deep water, the crowd pressed to the lit window, the Huddle rolling toward sunlight — pictures that cannot be explained yet refuse to fade.
In design it is closer to a tightly edited feature film than an episodic series. Gameplay and levels serve the rhythm, the rhythm serves a hazy emotional core, and the audio and visuals are unified to an almost severe degree, down to the clinical calm of the sound at the moment you die. If you need a toolbox of systems to play with, INSIDE will feel too short and too closed — that is the fair knock, and it is the reason its content dimension drags. But if you take pleasure in throwing yourself into a fiercely styled nightmare, these few hours of density more than earn the phrase "game of the year."
Worth one focused evening
What pushes it past mere style is the story. INSIDE delivers a bare-bones narrative that is provocative and genuinely worth arguing over without a single line of text — a rare restraint in an era where every plot point seems to demand its own wiki entry. Against Playdead's own LIMBO it goes further in staging, depth of field, and that final loss-of-control turn, with stronger emotional impact and more polished production throughout, which is why critics across IGN, Eurogamer, and Polygon treat it as the studio leveling up rather than repeating itself, and why its aggregate sits a clear notch above its predecessor.
The numbers confirm the reputation is broad, not niche. A Steam approval in the high nineties across tens of thousands of reviews, sitting alongside a wall of near-perfect critic scores, shows the goodwill is player agreement and not just critical enthusiasm. This is not a divisive cult oddity a handful of people defend; it is a widely respected piece whose only real disagreement is about length, never quality.
So is it worth your evening? If you want a game directed as deliberately as a film — one that leaves you needing a few minutes to recover when it ends — the answer is yes, and you should clear the evening, dim the lights, and give it nothing to compete with. Approached that way, the short runtime stops being a shortfall and becomes the whole shape of the thing: a single, complete, unforgettable night that asks for very little and lingers for far longer. INSIDE knows exactly what it wants to be, refuses to be anything else, and is stronger for the refusal — a focused, fearless piece of design that earns every one of its high marks without ever overstaying its welcome.
