It rebuilds four-player co-op around melee, and fifteen careers plus seven years of content make it the deepest hack-and-slash team game around

評測總結

Pull every dimension together and Vermintide 2 is a game with razor-clear intent: it does not try to please everyone, it only wants to do one thing — four-player melee co-op — to the hilt. The composite is 8.2. The right player will sink hundreds of hours into it; the wrong one will refund at the two-hour mark. The whole game is figuring out which one you are.

A seven-year evergreen with no real successor

First, place it in history. Released in 2018, 25 million lifetime players, a Steam positive rating parked at 84%, and still updating after seven years — that string of numbers states its weight on its own. It sits in OpenCritic's Strong tier, 92% of critics recommending, an 82 on Metacritic, an 8 out of 10 from IGN. Among the long, uneven roster of Warhammer adaptations, it is squarely the most successful of the lot.

A seven-year evergreen of co-op slaughter

More to the point, it has almost no real rival in its own narrow lane. "Four-player melee co-op" sounds like a common genre, but try to find another that matches it on melee feel, career progression and content depth all at once and you will come up empty. Some have the feel but thin content, some pile on content but swing limp, and the one that has all three is, for now, just this one. That is the bedrock of its seven-year run — not the absence of competitors, but the absence of anyone beating it head-on where it is strongest.

Who should buy, who should walk

Who should buy it? Players who love rolling with a fixed squad, who prefer the feel of melee over the rush of ranged shooting, who enjoy tinkering with career builds and weapon properties, and who do not flinch at grinding for progression.

The multiplier here is people. Round up three friends who play together regularly and the fun compounds — the squad coordination, the career synergy, the clutch rescues are the heart of the thing, and a bot-filled solo run will never give you that. If you already have a group hunting for its next shared evergreen, this is close to an automatic recommendation; the game was built from the floor up to reward the four of you learning it together over months rather than one of you grinding it alone.

Who should walk? Players after a single-player, story-driven trip — as covered, the plot is barely a whisper. Players allergic to repetition — the content tail is, at bottom, a grind. Players with zero tolerance for random loot-box drops — that system has been roasted for seven years for good reason. And players who cannot stomach rough localisation — the non-English text is stiff and inconsistent, and a few maps have weak wayfinding that gets you lost. Lone wolves can run with bots, but stripped of real teammates the experience visibly dims.

The thing nobody has copied

Back to the central call: what is hardest to replace here? It is that Vermintide 2 took the Left 4 Dead four-player formula and melee-ified it, fully and successfully. Left 4 Dead runs on ranged shooting, with ammo management as its rhythmic spine; Vermintide 2 rips that out and replaces it wholesale with swinging, blocking, shoving and stamina, then stacks fifteen careers of progression and seven years of content on top.

This was never a simple "swap the ranged weapon for a blade." To make melee co-op actually fun you have to solve feel, line-clearing, positioning and the special-enemy threat as one connected problem, and Vermintide 2 polished every link to a benchmark shine. Its own stablemate, Darktide, split ranged and melee fifty-fifty and diluted that purity in the process, which only underlines how deliberate the original choice was. So if what you want is the purest, thickest, most physically convincing close-quarters combat going, this seven-year-old hill still has nobody at the top of it, and the gap is not for lack of studios trying. Round up three friends, lift your warhammer, and you will understand inside a single run why it is still alive.
