“A JRPG milestone that stitches life-sim, turn-based combat, and a murder mystery into one; its dated visuals are the only real blemish.”
評測總結
The milestone that defined "modern Persona"
Placed within the history of JRPGs and the wider role-playing genre, Persona 4 holds a pivotal place. It is the key entry that truly carried the Persona series to the world and built its vast global fanbase.

It was with this entry that a once relatively niche series broke into the mainstream, using its singular mix of life sim, turn-based combat, and urban folk horror to lay the groundwork for the phenomenal sequel that followed. The design paradigm it pioneered — built around Social Links, binding human relationships tightly to combat growth — shaped an entire generation of its peers; countless games borrowed from it, and few ever truly surpassed it. Its scores — an 88 "Mighty" rating on OpenCritic, a 95% recommend rate, and a 97% positive rating on Steam — together underline its status as a milestone. More than the numbers, though, its influence is written across the genre itself: the social-sim-meets-RPG structure that now feels almost standard in Japanese role-playing games traces a straight line back here. To play Persona 4 today is, in a sense, to play the blueprint that a hundred later games were built from — and to discover that the original still holds up better than most of its descendants.
Is it right for you?
When it comes to whether you should buy it, the verdict is clear: it depends on what you want from a game. If you want a story that pulls you in and keeps you invested, a cast so vivid they feel like real friends, and a distinctive set of systems that neatly tie together daily life, combat, and emotion — and you are willing to put in more than a hundred hours — then Persona 4 Golden is an easy recommendation. It is also widely considered the best entry point for newcomers to the series. For the right player, there is no real downside here; the things it does brilliantly are the things that matter most in an RPG, and its one real weakness is visual. You do not need to have played anything else; it stands entirely on its own, asks for no prior knowledge, and welcomes you in with a warmth few epics of its size manage. For the right player, the only real cost is time, and the game rewards that investment many times over.

What makes a game last
But you should go in knowing this: you need to be able to accept visuals that are more than a decade old, along with some of the period limitations in certain scenes. Its most direct rival is the later, more visually refined, and mechanically complex Persona 5 Royal. For glamour and urban flair, P5R clearly comes out ahead, but Persona 4's simpler, warmer coming-of-age feel, rooted in a rural town, still holds an irreplaceable place in many longtime players' hearts. In the end, it proves one thing: what makes a game stay with people for more than a decade is not cutting-edge visuals, but the story it tells, the characters it brings to life, and the warmth it leaves in your heart long after the screen goes dark. You only have to ask yourself one question: are you willing to settle in and spend a full virtual year, in earnest, in the town of Inaba? If you are, it will almost certainly not let you down — and very likely it will become one of those special games you think back on years later and still feel warm about. There are not many games like that, and Persona 4 Golden is the one I would most readily recommend. Games chase better graphics every year, and every year those visuals are outdone; what does not get outdone is a world that made you feel something. Inaba is one of those worlds, and the year you spend there is the rare kind of game memory that only deepens with time. Look past its dated surface, and you will understand exactly why, more than a decade later, people still talk about it the way they talk about a friend. It is not flawless, and it does not need to be; what it is, instead, is unforgettable, and in a medium that produces far more polished games than memorable ones, that is the rarer and more valuable thing by far. Spend a hundred hours here and you will not be counting them — by the end, you will be wishing there were more.
