The co-op shooter that fuses destructible 3D caves, four interlocking classes and a mine-fight-extract loop into one underground rush

Unser Fazit

Deep Rock Galactic is a game that takes "small but mighty" to its limit. No grand narrative, no top-tier fidelity, and yet on the strength of one strange, sturdy core idea and a rare streak of operational honesty, it has become the most consistently beloved tier of co-op shooter in recent years. All told, I score it 8.5.

The numbers behind the long green line

The praise is not hot air; a chain of hard data props it up. An 85 on Metacritic, an 85 on OpenCritic landing it in the Mighty tier (recommended by 97% of critics, ranked in the top 5% of all games), and 97% positive across three hundred thousand Steam reviews. Whether you read the professional press or the player base, it stands in the front rank, and the two camps rarely agree this cleanly. Critics and players often pull in opposite directions; here they shake hands on the same verdict, which is usually the surest sign a game is doing something genuinely right rather than merely well-marketed.

More telling is the long tail. Sales climbed from two million units in 2021 to north of ten million today, and along the way it took home SXSW 2021's Indie Game of the Year and Excellence in Multiplayer. For a game that hit Early Access back in 2018 to keep that sales curve and that retention is something the legion of flash-in-the-pan co-op shooters can only dream about. It has also lived for years inside the major subscription line-ups, lowering the barrier for newcomers and rolling the snowball ever larger. Its quality, in other words, is not one good year — it is durability proven over and over by time.

Who should buy it, and who should walk past

So who is this actually for? If you have a regular crew, relish the teamwork that role-splitting creates, love the "just one more run" rhythm of a roguelite, and have a soft spot for the faintly decompressive pleasure of mining and digging, then Deep Rock Galactic is practically tailor-made for you — it will become the clubhouse you and your friends cannot put down.

Turn it around, though. If you only want to sit alone and live through a complete story, this game will let you down; it has almost none. If you are temperamentally allergic to running the same archetypes on repeat and demand a linear, one-and-done campaign from everything you play, its roguelite structure will not sit right with you either. Saying so plainly is fair to you and fair to the game. From a 2018 Early Access build, to a 2020 full release, to years of free Seasons since, Deep Rock spent six years turning "the evergreen co-op shooter" into an industry benchmark. It may not be the prettiest game on the shelf, nor the one that will ever move you to tears — but the instant four dwarves bellow "Rock and Stone!" together in the pitch black, packed shoulder to shoulder around a beleaguered resupply pod, you understand exactly why so many people keep choosing, run after run, to dig back down.
