PS5 Wallpaper Feature Criticized for Heavy UI Obstruction

PS5 players on Reddit and other forums are calling out the console's wallpaper customization feature for being largely obscured by UI elements and the game shortcut bar. Worse, the system automatically switches to game-specific backgrounds whenever you change titles, overriding whatever wallpaper you set.

This complaint exposes a core contradiction in Sony's UI philosophy: the system offers wallpaper customization, then buries your choice under dynamic backgrounds and gradient darkening effects. The wallpaper you carefully selected ends up visible only in small corners, creating a disjointed experience. The system's habit of auto-switching backgrounds based on the currently selected game makes it even more frustrating—your wallpaper gets replaced the moment you highlight a different title.

Veteran players in the community are looking back fondly at the PS3's XMB interface. That system may have looked plain, but its theme and wallpaper customization was robust—you could adjust component placement, transparency, and color schemes. Since the PS4, Sony has been stripping down theme customization options. The PS5 takes this to an extreme: the visual effects are polished, but user control has shrunk considerably.

What players want now is straightforward: disable the gradient darkening effect, allow free component placement, or at minimum provide an option to prioritize custom wallpapers over dynamic game backgrounds. These changes are technically feasible. The question is whether Sony will open up these permissions in a system update. Console UI isn't a one-and-done affair—the PS4 gained features incrementally through multiple updates over its lifespan.
