Players who can stomach a little dated design will get pulled ever deeper by Cyrodiil's wilderness and its faction quests, hour after hour.

Unser Fazit

It didn't rebuild the old game — it made the whole thing cohere again

Overall verdict and remaster positioning

Is Oblivion Remastered worth dozens of hours? Yes — provided you are clear on what you are buying. This is not a modern fantasy epic that tears the old game down and starts over. It is a remaster that keeps the original's soul and seriously refurbishes its surface. That distinction matters: if you expect a brand-new work reconceived around today's design thinking, you will be let down; if you want the Cyrodiil in your memory polished and walked again from end to end, it gives more than you bargained for.

Its charm is in no single breakthrough but in a whole character reasserting itself: the wilderness still grips you, the Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood lines still reward you, the roleplay depth stacked up by two expansions still runs deep, the Emperor-and-the-gates skeleton still holds. And the 12-virtue leveling fix lets that old skeleton walk smoothly for the first time, clearing the very hurdle that used to send newcomers packing before they ever reached the good part.

Who should buy it, who should walk past

Who should buy and platform advice

Its problems are just as clear, and none are the kind you wave off. Level scaling caps the thrill of growth; the dual-engine stutter defeats even an RTX 4090 at high resolutions; the period grain of the voice work keeps reminding you this was not redesigned to today's standard. That is why Steam holds at a 77% rating, and why the honest move is to set your expectations before you set your resolution.

For players who love old-school open worlds and can accept a little dated design, the pull far outruns the number — you will sink in like those four million launch buyers and keep going. For anyone who wants the smoothest, most modern experience and bristles at stutter or vintage acting, it is less welcoming; try it at a lower resolution first, or wait for a sale. On platform, the console versions hold frames more steadily, so performance-sensitive players who don't want to wrestle settings might start there rather than chase a stable framerate on PC.

Why it survived, in one line

Legacy and lasting appeal

Its rival — say the slicker, more modern Skyrim Special Edition — loses on one count: for all its smoother systems and bigger budget, it lacks Oblivion's strange humour and the roleplay flavour those two expansions pile on. Skyrim is the better-running game; Oblivion is the stranger, warmer one, and strangeness ages better than polish. OpenCritic's 86.4% recommendation rate across 118 reviews, the April US sales crown on all three platforms, and that line everyone keeps repeating — "if this is what an Elder Scrolls 6 looks like, I'm satisfied" — have already said it for me, more plainly than any score could. Annoying, but addictive; dated, yet full of flavour. It never set out to be the most advanced game of the year; it only set out to retell a classic, completely and beautifully, one more time. At that narrow, unfashionable goal, it succeeds almost completely — and that is why it is still here, still selling, and still worth the dozens of hours it will quietly take from you once you fall in again.
