You start as a blacksmith's son in a meticulously researched, magic-free 1403 Bohemia, and the steep barrier buys a rare kind of historical immersion

Nuestro veredicto

A narrow lane it actually paved

Its place as a grounded medieval landmark

Rewind to 2018 and Kingdom Come is standing on near-empty ground. The medieval open worlds of the day either packed themselves with dragons and spells or cast the hero as a creature of destiny. Almost no one dared make a game with no supernatural elements, rigorous historical research, and a starting point as humble as an illiterate blacksmith's son. Daniel Vávra insisted on exactly that unflattering project — and the narrow lane he chose turned out to be one he paved, a lane that remains the benchmark of its niche to this day.

What is hardest to copy is not any single system but the combination punch of commoner growth and historical truth. Skyrim is freer, friendlier and easier for more people to enjoy, but Skyrim cannot give you the felt reality of climbing from a penniless country boy into someone who can tip a battle. That reality is what Kingdom Come bet everything on, and it is what the game won. Eight years on, plenty of studios have built bigger and prettier medieval worlds, yet almost none have dared to make you start this small and earn this slowly — which is why the lane still belongs to it.

Who it is for, the version to buy, and the legacy

The player it was built for, and its standing

So who is it for? The answer is unusually clear. If you are a hardcore RPG player who is happy to be bound by rules, who values historical immersion over combat catharsis, who will spend the time climbing that steep learning curve and savouring the slow craft of grinding herbs, picking locks and reading strikes in a duel, this game was very nearly built to your measure. A quick self-test settles it: when you hear "you start unable to read and have to learn literacy in-world," does that thrill you or annoy you? The first answer means this is your game; the second means no reputation will carry you over the wall. Players who want save-anywhere convenience, instant gratification and combat that feels good from minute one should walk away — the early beatings, the save anxiety and the sheer friction of the sim will grind their patience down.

If you do buy in, the version call is simple: the Royal Edition with all four DLCs is the complete package, and the 2026 next-gen release smooths the rough edges that tormented day-one players. The résumé carries weight, too — Best PC Game at Gamescom 2017, a narrative award from the Central & Eastern European Game Awards, and sales past ten million, each one vindicating an awkward, uncompromising game. More striking still, its standing keeps rising in reverse: the 2025 sequel arrived with a million-copy first day and a near-rapturous reception, and that triumph has only burnished the original's status as the foundation it all grew from. Many players met the sequel's acclaim first and circled back to this origin point. A game with a split launch reputation has, over time and on the back of its sequel, nailed itself into RPG history — which is the truest reward its early refusal to compromise could have earned.
