Got three friends who'll actually turn on voice chat? This one makes shooting the last resort: you sneak through the dark together, scan doors in sync, and one slip wipes everyone. The barrier is brutal, but that survived-by-the-skin-of-our-teeth tension is hard to find elsewhere.

GTFO Still Feels Like Four People Defusing A Live Charge In The Dark

GTFO is the game 10 Chambers made when they looked at four-player co-op and basically said, “What if everyone actually had to cooperate?” Not just stand near each other. Not just revive each other. Actually move like one nervous little organism in a pitch-black hole.

That’s the thing that still makes it special. This is a first-person co-op horror shooter, sure, but “shooter” almost feels like a trap word. In Left 4 Dead 2, the fun is often the panic spray, the horde, the big messy save. GTFO does the opposite. The weapon is what you use when the plan has already started bleeding out. Most of the time, you’re mapping rooms with the bio-tracker, whispering callouts, counting Sleepers, timing melee hits, and praying nobody bumps the wrong thing.

And when it works, it’s nasty in the best way. Four players stack up on a door. Everyone knows their job. Somebody brings the right tool. Somebody watches scans. Somebody tracks movement. Then one person slips, one enemy wakes up, and the whole room turns into a screaming disaster. That’s GTFO. It’s not “co-op” as a feature. It’s co-op as the entire threat model.

Back when it hit 1.0 on December 10, 2021, it already felt like a hard pivot away from comfy co-op power fantasy. Today, after the final Rundown 8.0, “Duality,” it’s easier to recommend because you’re not buying into a half-finished experiment. You’re getting the permanent full package, with 80-plus challenge levels available. That matters. This is the most complete, most stable time to jump in.

The 86% Steam Crowd Gets It, But A Lot Of Players Will Bounce

GTFO screenshot

The numbers tell the story pretty cleanly: GTFO has a 78 on Metacritic, an 80.0 on IGDB, and 78.4 on OpenCritic with a 64.7% recommendation rate. On Steam, though, it’s sitting at 86% Very Positive across 45,472 reviews. That gap makes sense. Critics can admire it and still warn people away. Players who find the right squad? They get hooked.

But let’s be blunt. If you’re a solo-first player, don’t buy this expecting the game to bend around you. If you mostly matchmake with randoms, same warning. GTFO leans hard on a fixed four-player crew with voice chat, and without that, the whole thing drops off fast. You can’t casually vibe your way through levels built around synchronized scans, tool roles, silent clearing, and failure states that punish one sloppy move.

It also barely teaches you. The in-game guidance is thin, and a lot of the learning comes from failing, experimenting, or looking stuff up. Some people love that. They want the wipe, the lesson, the retry, the eventual clean run where everyone is locked in and yelling for three seconds after the extraction because they can’t believe they pulled it off. That’s the buyer. Four friends. Microphones on. Patience loaded. Ego checked at the door.

If you want a relaxed co-op shooter you can boot for one chill mission after work, GTFO is not that game, and if high frustration makes you uninstall, it’ll eat you alive. And if you need a strong story campaign, PvP, or console options, you’re out of luck: this is PC only, there’s no single-player campaign, no PvP, and the narrative is mostly connective tissue between runs.

Buy The Final PC Version If You’ve Got The Squad For It

My overall score here is an 8.0 out of 10, and that’s not me being cute. GTFO is not an 8 because it’s safe or broadly friendly. It’s an 8 because it does one brutally specific thing better than almost anything else: hardcore co-op horror stealth where four people have to think, move, and panic together.

The atmosphere does a lot of heavy lifting too. The Sleepers’ pulsing light isn’t just a detection tell; it’s a horror gag that keeps working because it controls the whole room. You’re waiting for that rhythm. You’re holding your breath. Simon Viklund’s sound design squeezes the space around you until every click, breath, and distant shriek feels like it’s happening inside your helmet. That claustrophobia is a huge part of why shooting feels so expensive. There’s pedigree behind it too: 10 Chambers was founded by people tied to Payday, with Ulf Andersson directing, and you can feel that obsession with coordinated crews. But GTFO is meaner, quieter, and way less forgiving. The voice cast includes Edward Bosco, Ronan Summers, Jamie Ballard, Erik Braa, and more, though honestly, the story side is still the weak link. You’re here for the run, not the lore.

So here’s the clean recommendation: if you have three reliable friends, voice chat, and a taste for smashing your head against hard missions until the breakthrough finally hits, GTFO is absolutely worth it today. If you don’t have that setup, wait or skip it. There isn’t another co-op horror stealth game with this exact depth, but that doesn’t mean everyone should suffer through it. It means the right people should.
