“It turns eating, bleeding and shooting into a discipline you study — a deep-end survival sim built for the hardcore”

評測總結

Come all the way back round and SCUM distils into a single line: a hardcore survival game that sorts its audience by sheer depth of simulation, one that will not court everyone but pins the right people in place for good. The 8.0 is both a salute to the thickness of its systems and an honest reservation about its steep threshold and its long, lurching development.

A coordinate in time: 2018 phenomenon, 2025 finished thing

To understand SCUM you have to set it back on its seven-year timeline. It arrived in Early Access in 2018, sold over a million copies in its first month, and stood as a genre phenomenon of its moment. Then it took an unusually long road, only reaching 1.0 in June 2025. Along the way it changed hands more than once — publishing and development passing from Devolver onward through Jagex and beyond — and the turbulence of that journey is part of why its reputation runs so hot and cold.

Prison island sunset

So looking at SCUM today, it is neither a bolt-from-the-blue newcomer nor a fully finished building, but more like a structure raised over seven years, finally topped out, still being fitted out room by room inside. Its foundations — that simulation stack — are astonishingly solid, and 1.0 has dressed the façade of visuals and stability handsomely; a few rooms are simply still under the decorator's hand.

That history matters when you set expectations. A game does not spend the better part of a decade in Early Access without accumulating both scar tissue and devotion, and SCUM carries plenty of each. The miracle is less that it finished and more that it kept a passionate community intact across all those years of half-built promise — proof, if any were needed, of how potent the underlying systems really are.

Who it is for, and who should walk on by

SCUM's target portrait is unusually sharp. If you are the kind of hardcore survival veteran who enjoys excavating complex systems, who treats the running of a virtual body as the fun part, who will happily take notes to master nutrition and medical sim, then this prison island is a deep end built to your measure, offering immersion and payoff you simply will not find elsewhere.

Lone survival

Flip it around, and if what you want is a pick-up-and-play loop — brisk, breezy, light scavenging and quick action — SCUM will most likely turn you away at the door with its fiddly menus and punishing mechanics. The learning curve is steep enough that even battle-hardened survival hands may struggle, let alone anyone arriving in a casual frame of mind. It never hides how demanding it is, and you would do well not to wander in expecting a relaxed afternoon.

Which leaves the central question: will SCUM be replaced? On the narrow road it owns, not for now. Almost no other survival game models nutrition and medical realism to this depth. DayZ, its closest contemporary, stops its survival sim at hunger, thirst and temperature; SCUM digs further into the body, and further still. That hard-won moat is exactly why, even after seven bumpy years, it keeps an irreplaceable seat in the hardcore player's heart.
