“First person drags the series back to its mansion roots; the Baker house is a horror high, while the back half tilts to action”
評測總結
A gamble that hauled a dying series back to its roots

Rewind to 2017, and Resident Evil 7 means far more than a good game — it was a successful resuscitation. After two increasingly action-blockbuster sequels had sunk the reputation and very nearly lost the audience, this entry used first-person, claustrophobia and slow-burn survival horror to wrench the whole franchise bodily back to where it stood twenty years earlier. The consensus is uncommonly tidy: this is the best the series had been since Resident Evil 4.
The objective record backs it. An 86 on OpenCritic, recommended by 91 percent of critics, an 83 on the PC Metacritic, and an Overwhelmingly Positive 95 percent across more than eighty thousand Steam reviews. Those numbers together pin it to a clear coordinate — excellent, but not the flawless masterpiece. Its greatness clusters in the first half, its regret in the second, and that honesty is simply what the game is.
What matters more is the direction it pointed. In an age when every blockbuster was racing toward bigger spectacle and wider maps, Resident Evil 7 ran against the current and did subtraction, proving with a single haunted house that the power of horror never lived in scale but in that face-to-face, nowhere-to-run suffocation. The gamble did not only revive a series; it planted a fresh benchmark for the entire first-person horror genre. You can trace its DNA forward through the remakes and Village; the line that runs to Resident Evil today starts in this farmhouse, not in any of the bombastic sequels it quietly disowned.
Who should buy in, who should steer clear, and why it resists copying

So who, exactly, should step into the Baker house? If you long for that slow-burning atmosphere, the strung-tight resources, the willingness to hand yourself over to the dark and be thoroughly frightened — if you are a longtime fan still pining for the original mansion, or simply a devotee of first-person horror — it is all but tailored to you. Flip it around, and if what you want is brisk run-and-gun, if you cannot stand prolonged claustrophobic tension, or if gore and shock themselves set you on edge, this estate will leave you squirming, and steering clear is the kinder call.
Commercially it sold north of 15.4 million copies to become the franchise's second best-seller, and it swept the year's VR awards — a soft reboot that won on both critical and commercial fronts. And what most resists copying is something hard to quantify: the tension wound from first-person claustrophobia and mansion-style resource management. Inside the Baker house you grow scared and curious about every door you have not yet opened, afraid of what waits behind it, unwilling not to look. Its most direct rival, first-person horror benchmark Outlast, strips the player into prey that can only flee — pure tension, but thin. Resident Evil 7 leaves a sliver of defiance in your grip throughout, and it is precisely that scrap of "I can still fight" dignity that keeps its horror so hard for anyone to fully replicate.
Nearly a decade on, that balance still has not been bettered, not even by the entries that followed it. Village leaned back toward spectacle; the remakes traded first-person intimacy for nostalgia. Resident Evil 7 remains the cleanest expression of the idea — a man, a flashlight, a house that wants him dead — and that purity is its lasting claim on the genre.
