# Verdict

Context: from indie dark horse to industry landmark

The 2020 market environment handed Hades a uniquely sized window. On one side, the pandemic-driven home-gaming surge pushed indie sales to historic highs. On the other side, the same year had The Last of Us Part II in April, Final Fantasy VII Remake in March, Ghost of Tsushima in July, and Cyberpunk 2077 looming for December — the spring and summer slate was already packed with AAA megaprojects. A roguelike from a 20-person studio with a 24-dollar launch price clawed its way through all of that to the DICE Game of the Year stage. That outcome was not luck. It was design choices that landed squarely on the pain points of "narrative meets roguelike."

Looking back from today, the "narrative roguelike" lane only became a real industry conversation in the years after Hades. Vampire Survivors, Rogue Legacy 2, Slay the Spire 2, the Echo Project, Returnal — all of them absorbed the "meta progression plus characterized dialogue" template from Hades. Supergiant's own sequel Hades II hit 1.0 on September 25, 2025 and arrived on PS5, Xbox, and Game Pass in April 2026, then re-entered the DICE 2026 Game of the Year nominations. The lane went from "small experiment" five years ago to "standard template" today, and Hades is the largest single contributor to that shift.

You can trace a clear before-and-after line in roguelike design discourse — before Hades, the genre conversation centered on procedural variety and combat purity; after Hades, the conversation added "how do you make players care about the world they keep dying in," and that question is now baked into pitch decks for every new entry in the space. Hades made caring about the world the central engagement loop, and once that template existed, every studio building a roguelike had to answer how it would address the same problem or risk feeling dated by comparison.

Who should buy it

Group one — players who want a roguelike that holds them for 60 hours of binge-watching style play. If Isaac, Dead Cells, and Slay the Spire bounced you off because "the replay didn't motivate me," Hades is designed precisely for you. Narrative density carries 60 to 100 hours of repeat runs.

Group two — Greek mythology fans. The game freely modernizes the myths, casting the Olympians as a modern family drama, but every character relationship and mythological setup is grounded in solid research. Readers familiar with Homer, Hesiod or Ovid will spot many quiet tributes.

Group three — Supergiant veterans who grew up on Bastion, Transistor, and Pyre. Hades continues the studio's hallmarks — the storyteller voiceover, isometric perspective, Darren Korb's score — and finally solves the replay-value problem that haunted earlier titles, making it the studio's defining work.

Group four — players seeking a "gateway roguelike" for partners or kids. God Mode plus a smooth difficulty curve plus narrative drive sets the entry bar far below comparable titles. Among the four target groups listed here, the fourth has been the fastest-growing demographic over the last five years, which is itself a vote of confidence in the studio's accessibility-first design philosophy and the broader trend of the genre opening up to more casual audiences.

Who should not buy it

Group one — players who hate repetition or only love one-and-done playthroughs. The core loop is "die repeatedly, restart repeatedly." Unlocking the full ending requires at least 30 to 50 successful escapes. If your purchase calculation is "I want to finish it in 10 to 15 hours and shelve it," the value of this game is severely understated for you.

Group two — players who only enjoy PVP or co-op. Hades is purely single-player with no multiplayer mode, no co-op clears, no competitive ladder. If you want a roguelike to play with friends, look toward other directions like The Forgotten City.

Group three — action-incompetent players who refuse to use God Mode. Normal mode is not trivially easy and demands solid reaction times. Even with God Mode as a safety net, some players psychologically reject "cheat-style" aids, and that population will find the experience anxiety-inducing.

Group four — players who love traditional RPG branching endings. There is only one main ending. The "branching feel" is entirely in the NPC relationship arcs, but never alters the final story trajectory. Veterans of Disco Elysium, The Witcher 3, and Mass Effect's three-line branches may walk away disappointed.

Recommended versions and discount lines

First choice — the Steam version. Benefits include native 4K support, the community mod ecosystem, Steam Deck Verified status, cross-device cloud saves, and the full achievement system. Launch price was 24.99 dollars; five years post-release it typically drops to 10 to 15 dollars on sale, and the five-year anniversary 75% off promotion pulls it down to 6 dollars. That price-to-content ratio is rare in the entire 2026 Steam library.

Second choice — Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. The handheld mode was practically designed for this game — 25 to 40 minute runs fit a commute, Switch 2 hits native 90 frames per second, and cross-platform saves let you play at home on PC and on the go on Switch without losing progress. Switch 2's HDR support is also a real upgrade from the original, putting the visual quality closer to PC's high preset.

PS5 and Xbox Series. If you subscribe to the Xbox service, you get the full game at zero cost — go that route. If you do not subscribe and already own the console, wait for the holiday sale to drop to 60% or lower. PS5's haptic feedback is the biggest console exclusive feature here — the Aegis successful-block pulse is precise enough that you can almost predict an enemy's next move.

There is only one version not worth buying — the iOS Netflix release. It was retired in July 2025 and is no longer accessible. The Mac version is fine to purchase, but because Steam compatibility on M-series chips is actually better, Mac players are better served by going through Steam than buying the App Store version. If you already own the Mac App Store copy, syncing it cross-platform to Steam is free and the studio officially encourages this migration.
